At the top of the Illinois-Cincinnati broadcast on ABC, Bob Griese offered up a nugget nearly as eyebrow-raising as Griese’s recent commentary regarding Colombian cuisine.
Teed up by our buddy Chris Spielman, who looks to be doing very well after enduring what surely has been the most difficult week of his life, Griese nonchalantly dropped a bombshell.
“I talked to Brian Kelly on the field just before the ball game, and he said something will be decided in the next seven to 10 days,” Griese said.
Wow.
Here’s what this implies, in our view.
First, Notre Dame coach Charlie Weis is out.
Second, Kelly already has been contacted by Notre Dame.
It also could mean that Kelly already has been offered the job. Kelly’s adroit use of the passive voice makes that specific wrinkle unclear — either Notre Dame will be making a decision about whether to hire Kelly or Kelly will be making a decision about whether to go to South Bend.
Either way, the fact that Kelly has spoken about the situation suggests to us that he’s a serious candidate — and that he’s seriously considering the opportunity.
