It's official: Pac-10 extends invite to Utah

So much for the “drama” of that Thursday afternoon Board of Trustees meeting and subsequent press conference.

As expected, the Pac-10, per their official site, has extended an invitation to Utah to become the 12th member of their conference.  And, at the above-mentioned press conference, the Utes will accept and officially end their future relationship with the Mountain West.

There is no word yet on when Utes would begin play in their new league.  Additionally, as reported previously, Utah will pay no financial penalty to the Mountain West for leaving the conference.

This move will officially put to an end months of speculation that the Utes would be headed to the West Coast during this latest round of conference expansion and realignment.  That move was put in doubt due to the Pac-10’s courting of half of the Big 12, but ramped-up earlier this week when the Big 12 schools rebuffed the Pac-10’s offer.

As to what happens to the Mountain West — which just added Boise State earlier this month to get to ten schools — it remains to be seen whether they will stay at nine schools as they have been since 2005, or if they will pursue a school from a conference such as the WAC or Conference USA.
