Not that it really matters all that much, given the player’s extensive experience at this level, but Iowa could very well be without their leading receiver when spring practice opens next month.
According to Marc Morehouse of the Cedar Rapids Gazette, senior-to-be Marvin McNutt underwent surgery recently to repair damage to his thumb and shoulder. As a result of the procedures, the wide receiver will very likely be held out of the spring sessions.
McNutt should be completely healthy for the start of summer camp in a few months, however.
Perhaps the only issue with McNutt presumably being unable to participate in spring ball is the fact that the Hawkeyes will be breaking in a new starting quarterback. Three-year starter Ricky Stanzi‘s eligibility expired and the spring would’ve provided a significant opportunity for McNutt to get a jumpstart on his on-field relationship with James Vandenberg or whoever ultimately emerges as Stanzi’s replacement.
Last season, McNutt’s 53 receptions and 861 receiving yards paced the Hawkeyes. His eight touchdown receptions were good for second on the team.
