Following up on a multiple reports from earlier Tuesday, it appears West Virginia’s official move to the Big 12 is imminent. Very, very imminent.
In a headline partially which partially reads “Done deal…”, Mike Casazza of the Charleston Daily Mail reports that WVU has applied for membership into the Big 12 and been accepted. Casazza’s report buttresses one from the New York Times which essentially relayed the same the same type of confirmation of WVU’s impending move.
Mitch Vingle of the Charleston Gazette is reporting the same, that WVU to the Big 12 is a done deal, but also takes it a step further by tweeting that “[t]here will be a press conference with the Big 12 folks tomorrow” to announce the move.
There still might be a little bit of work for the folks at WVU to do ahead of a press conference; Casazza writes that “[t]he details of WVU’s move are still being finalized — specifically when WVU could leave the Big East and join the Big 12, but the sources told the Daily Mail the decision has been approved on both sides.”
Should the Mountaineers leave, the Big East would be reduced to just one original football member — Rutgers. The departure could also officially mark the beginning of the end of the Big East as a football-playing conference.
