The expansion process for the Big East is beginning to build up momentum after a longer-than-it-should-have-been delay. Central Florida’s Board of Trustees have announced that they will meet via teleconference Friday to discussion “athletic conference realignment issues.”
UCF has maintained that, despite meeting with Big East officials on prior occasions, the school has not received an invite yet. The newest meeting could be similar to the one planned by Houston’s Board of Regents for later today where the board authorizes the school president to make all decisions related to conference affiliation, although no announcement on that front has been made.
With West Virginia and Louisville battling it out over what may be the final spot in the Big 12, the Big East is down — at least in theory — to four football members until the Big 12 drama ends. The effort is underway to get that number back up; whether the goal remains 12 football members or not remains unclear.
As John noted earlier, Air Force had an informal sit-down with the Big East over “why the academy is a good fit” in the beleaguered conference. Rumor was also afoot yesterday that Big East commissioner John Marinatto was in Boise attempting to “close the deal” with the Broncos, but that meeting is apparently going to be held today. Boise State did confirm they had met with the Big East on Sunday in Washington DC.
UCF, Boise State, Air Force, Navy and SMU have all been connected to the Big East’s expansion plans.
