Wulff’s firing by Wazzu imminent; Leach their top target?

For those who enjoy the time of year which brings the lopping off of the heads of underperforming coaches, you’re in luck as the coaching carousel is about to commence in earnest.

With one already out the door this weekend, and another on his way, the Seattle Times is reporting that Paul Wulff is all but out as Washington State’s head coach.  Wulff, who has one year remaining on his contract, is expected to meet with WSU athletic director Bill Moos either today or tomorrow to discuss the status of the football program, with a decision announced shortly thereafter.

Perhaps the only surprise would be if the school didn’t go in a different direction.  Wulff has won just nine of his 49 games in his four years as the Cougars’ head coach, and has seemingly been on the coaching hot seat for more than two of those seasons.  Oddly enough, Wulff compiled his best season record-wise this year as WSU went 4-8, which is just one victory shy of the team’s total for the first three years of his tenure combined.

Citing sources familiar with the process, the Times also reports that WSU will have Mike Leach at the top of their coaching to-do list.  Leach has been out of coaching since his messy departure from Texas Tech in December of 2009, but has been mentioned in connection to nearly every job that has come open since the start of the season.
