As Georgia gets set to kick off spring practice a week from tomorrow, the Bulldogs have an off-field issue with which to deal.
According to a website called RickyStokesNews.com, Georgia cornerback Branden Smith was arrested Sunday night and charged with possession of marijuana following a traffic stop. Smith was the driver of a 2007 Dodge Charger when it was pulled over in Henry County (Ga.).At the time of the traffic stop Deputy Motzenbecker smelled what appeared to be marijuana from the vehicle. The driver and passenger were removed from the vehicle and the vehicle searched. On searching the vehicle the deputy found a bag of marijuana wrapped up under the seat of the vehicle.
Both the driver and passenger were arrested and booked into the Henry County Jail for Possession of Marijuana, a misdemeanor offense. The time of the arrest was about 11:41 PM tonight.
Smith and his passenger were reportedly headed to the beach for spring break. UGA has yet to comment on Smith’s arrest.
In 2011, Smith played in 14 games, starting seven of those contests and intercepting two passes. Smith was one of several Bulldogs who eschewed early entry into the NFL draft and instead returned to UGA for another season.
Smith becomes the second starting member of UGA’s secondary to be arrested in less than two months; in January, corner Sanders Commings was charged with domestic violence and simple battery. He was suspended for two games as a result.
