With a passing game that’s still developing with quarterback David Ash, Texas is going to be missing its top wideout in 2013.
Longhorns receiver Mike Davis told ESPN’s Joe Schad that he will declare for this year’s NFL draft.
“This is about my family and finances. It’s a good time to take it to the next level. I enjoyed my time playing for Texas and it meant a lot to me,” Davis said.
“I can be a big play, deep threat. I can stretch the field and run good routes and move the chains. I can also return kicks and punts. I want to show the scouts everything I can do.”
Davis added that he has been told he is a projected third-round pick as of today. It should be noted, however, that a UT spokesperson said he is unaware of Davis’ decision to turn pro and Davis tweeted earlier this week that he was staying.
The junior from Dallas had 939 receiving yards this season with seven touchdowns — far and away his best year. He would leave UT with 2026 yards and 10 receiving touchdowns.
Updated 6:24 p.m. ET: ESPN’s Joe Schad, who interviewed Mike Davis earlier this afternoon, now reports that the receiver is now “unclear” and “not sure” about his declaration.
Updated 10:45 p.m. ET: We’ve come full circle, folks. In a statement Thursday evening, Davis said “I am sorry for any confusion today. I want everyone to know that I’m coming back for my senior year.”
So, good news for the Longhorns.
