The only thing known about Gunner Kiel‘s future as of earlier this month was that it wouldn’t involve Notre Dame, as Irish coach Brian Kelly said Kiel had been granted his release and was no longer part of the team.
While Kiel’s next stop is not yet known, the former five-star recruit is at least looking at, of all places, Kelly’s former stomping grounds. According to Tom Groeschen of the Cincinnati Enquirer, Kiel was at Cincinnati’s scrimmage on Saturday as part of a long trip. Groeschen goes on to report that the Bearcats feel they have a good chance at landing the former Irish QB.
(Kidding, folks. Sort of.)
The No. 1 quarterback in the Class of 2012, Kiel originally, and surprisingly, committed to Indiana in July of 2011 before decommitting three months later. In December of that year, Kiel flipped his verbal commitment to LSU, only to back off that commitment a month or so later.
Kiel was eventually announced to be a member of Notre Dame’s 2012 class as an early enrollee. Unable to beat Everett Golson for the Irish’s starting QB job, Kiel redshirted the 2012 season.
