Report: Texas AD Dodds to step down

Texas athletic director DeLoss Dodds is expected to announced on Tuesday that he will step down from his job next August, the Austin American-Statesman reported on Monday. ESPN’s Joe Schad later confirmed the report.

The 76-year-old Dodds denied his retirement in recent months but, according to Kirk Bohls, he will stay on with Texas until Aug. 31, 2014 and then serve as a consultant through 2015.

“He’s going to announce it tomorrow,” one of the well-placed sources said. “They were going to do it today but decided to wait because they didn’t want to detract from the passing of (legendary former Longhorn quarterback) James Street.”

Texas wants to have his successor picked before Dec. 1.

Dodds’ pending retirement could mean embattled Longhorns coach Mack Brown may not be long for Austin. Dodds hired Brown back in 1998 and, as is often the case, a new athletic director will probably want to get his own guy in place.
