As expected, Tulsa fires Bill Blankenship

After two straight seasons without a bowl trip and a record of 5-19, Tulsa has fired head coach Bill Blankenship. The decision to remove Blankenship as head coach was previously reported and expected to be a formality. That came Monday morning with the decision being made final.

“We are grateful for the service and commitment of coach Blankenship to our university, our student-athletes and our community, but we have decided that the program needs to go in a different direction,” a statement from Tulsa athletics director Derrick Gragg said Monday.

Gragg also said a search committee will be formed to begin the search for a new head coach immediately.

In four years as head coach of the Golden Hurricane, Blankenship was 24-27 with one Conference USA championship and a Liberty Bowl victory in 2012. Tulsa left Conference USA to join the American Athletic Conference this season. Tulsa finished this season with a record fo 2-10.
