Josh Heupel confirms he, Sooners have parted ways

Monday, a report surfaced that Josh Heupel had been axed from Bob Stoops‘ Oklahoma coaching staff.

A day later, the person on the receiving end of the axe has confirmed as much.

In a tweet posted to his Twitter account, Heupel confirmed that he is no longer a part of the OU staff.  The co-offensive coordinator, though, did not go so far as to acknowledge that he was fired, saying only that he and his family “look forward to new opportunities.”

Stoops will address the media at noon ET Tuesday, where he will presumably clarify the status of his staff, including Heupel and fellow co-coordinator Jay Norvell.  It was reported over the weekend that Norvell would not return for the 2015 season as well.

Heupel, who played quarterback for the Sooners, spent every year of his 11-year coaching career but one (Arizona, 2005) at OU, beginning as a grad assistant in 2004.  He became the quarterbacks coach in 2006, and was then promoted to co-coordinator in 2010.

UPDATED 12:05 p.m. ET: At his early-afternoon press conference, Bob Stoops confirmed that Josh Heupel and Jay Norvell are no longer a part of his coaching staff.

Other than those two moves, as well as promoting Jerry Montgomery to co-defensive coordinator, Stoops said no more staff changes are expected.
