Iowa’s Brant Gressel cited for public intoxication

Imagine that — a college student running afoul of the law and alcohol is involved.  Whoda thunk?

Regardless, Iowa confirmed in a press release Sunday afternoon that one of its Hawkeye football players, defensive lineman Brant Gressel, was cited for public intoxication by Iowa City law enforcement officials Saturday evening.  No details of what led to the citation were divulged by the school.

The release did state that “Gressel is subject to established university protocol in regards to the UI student life code of conduct and team rules and regulations set for members of the football program.”  Translation?  Gressel is likely facing at least a one-game suspension.

Athletic department officials are also in the process of gathering additional information regarding the incident.

As a redshirt sophomore last season, Gressel did not play in any games. Gressel was a three-star member of the Hawkeyes’ 2013 recruiting class.
